Today is Suicide Awareness Day and we’re all prompted to ask the question to promote awareness of this cause. Please, take the time and ask someone if they’re ok.
Over a number of years working with adolescents in a welfare type role, I’ve spoken with too many teens who have thoughts of taking their own life. Extensive training has given me experience in what’s helpful, and also what’s not, to say in such a situation… but it’s never easy dealing with a young person in so much pain.
The aftermath of suicide is huge and for every self-taken life, when someone in their darkest moment believes possibly no one will care, hundreds of people… friends and family… are impacted. Forever.
Suicidal thoughts are not uncommon amongst our young people and tragically Australia has a significantly high incidence of youth suicide.
So, please hug tightly today and ask if everything’s ok….
